Each subject participated in four sessions, which were conducted in two consecutive days (first day: sessions 1 and 2, second day: sessions 3 and 4). Subjects were required to rest for~30 min between sessions. (B) In each session, perceived pain intensity, unpleasantness, electroencephalographic (EEG) data, and positive and negative affects were collected from all subjects before and after the intervention. One control condition and three types of interventions, including the VR alone, the combination of VR with conventional TENS, and the combination of VR with synchronous TENS, were randomly assigned to each session. (C) During the EEG data acquisition, 40 laser pulses at two stimulus intensities were delivered to the dorsum of the left hand for each subject.
